General Information
The village of Monte Carasso was recorded as having a population of 2,907 in 2016, is located near the town of Bellinzona, Canton of Ticino, in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, just south of the Alps. Since 2017, Monte Carasso has joined many other villages in becoming part of the agglomeration of the town of Bellinzona, which is the capital of the Canton of Ticino and the district of the same name. Bellinzona has 42,084 inhabitants (as of 2017), while the district as a whole has more than 50,000 inhabitants.
From the south, Monte Carasso is described as the “key to the alps,” while from the north, the village is known as the “gateway to Italy.” Bellinzona offers visitors and its own residents a rich historical and geographic medieval heritage. Its narrow streets, its squares and courtyards, and its old houses are evidence of this. Bellinzona also has three famous castles, which speak of a centuries-old history influenced by the Romans, Langobards, Swiss, and Milanese. This rich heritage exists in perfect harmony with modern architectural creations of the renowned Ticino school.
Bellinzona is a regional and international hub of main roads and railway lines. You can access the starting point of the north-south freeway, which leads to the alpine passes of Gotthard, Lukmanier, San Bernardino, and Nufenen, as well as the Gotthard Road Tunnel. The Gotthard Base Tunnel was opened on June 1, 2016, and is the longest railway tunnel in the world.
With an average of over 2,300 hours of sunshine per year and a very mild climate, the meteorological conditions in Ticino are extremely pleasant. Protected by the Alps, Ticino enjoys mild winters and Mediterranean summers.

The Teatro Sociale is the best example of a neoclassical Italian theater in Switzerland. 150 years after its initial construction, it was restored to its original splendor. The theater not only offers a cultural opportunity for the region but also serves as an exceptional tourist attraction.

Historic center of Bellinzona
A walk around the historic center of Bellinzona is full of many pleasant surprises. Don’t miss Nosetto square, which is surrounded by covered foothpaths (arcades) and is the venue of a popular regional market on Saturdays. You must also visit the Palazzo Civico, the town hall, which is built in the style of the Italian Renaissance and features an attractive courtyard garden.

Augustinian monastery in Monte Carasso
The monastery and its church date back to the 15th century. It was shut down in 1859 and left to the mercy of the weather and natural decay. It was not until 1977 that it was reopened as part of a complete renovation of the village center, coordinated by architect Luigi Snozzi. It is a pioneering example of architectural planning for the public space. Also worth a visit is the church of San Bernardo with its remarkable frescoes originating from the 15th-17th centuries. The key to the church can be requested at the lower terminus of the Mornera cableway.
