About Davos
General Information
Davos with its 12,500 inhabitants at an altitude of 1560 m/ 5118 feet is not only Europe's most extensive Alpine holiday, sports and convention resort, but also offers an unforgettable mountain scenery in the heart of the spectacular alpine atmosphere. Thomas Mann for example immortalized the place in his book "The Magic Mountain".Thanks to the dry and pollen-free air numerous health research institutes have settled, founding Davos' worldwide reputation as a health spa and since 1971 the annual World Economic Forum, which attracts leading personalities of politics, business and arts, has contributed to Davos' fame as convention center.
Places to visit
Ice stadium
Completed in 1981 this impressive wooden construction is the biggest stadium ice rink in Europe.
Lengmatta, Frauenkirch
This rural settlement has been preserved largely in its original condition. The village features a number of attractive farmhouses including the Kindschi House, which dates from the early 16th century, buildings adorned with family signs, and the old school house, with a copy of a wooden sculpture by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner over the door.
The Pischa nature reserve in the Flüela Valley
The reserve was created to protect the local flora and extends along the northern side of the valley up to Tschuggen, taking in the Tschuggenberg, the Pischahorn, the Flüelaberg, the Pedraberg, the Hörnli, the Seehorn and the Obersand.
Alpinum Schatzalp
The botanical garden has some 10,000 plants of around 800 different types, and now features the new "Alfred Vogel Garden of Medicinal Herbs".
Rathaus (Town hall)
The main attraction of the town hall is the "Grosse Stube", which means "great hall". It has a elaborate marquetry in the Italian Renaissance style. Originally erected in 1564, the present edifice replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire.
Churches
St. Johann's Church
The church boasts a choir window entitled "Paradise" and four other windows created by Augusto Giacometti in 1928. Its tower erected in 1481 is famous for its elegant misshape of the steeple caused by the weather: the heat of the winter alpine sun shining on one side combined with the the cold and the chilling winds on the other.
Sport facilities
The landscape around Davos and its beautiful meadows, woods, pastures and above all mountains is accessible by 450 km of signed and maintained hiking trails. Comfortable paths for stolling or narrow mountain tracks through steep terrain above the tree line - delve into the true hiking country! Explore the old settlements of the Walser, and move through distant valleys of the Davos region.
Besides the common sports guests can also enjoy canyoning through the Viamala, climbing, golf (18 holes), mountain biking, para-gliding, riding, river drafting or hiking amongst others.
