History

In 1201, Olten was mentioned for the first time in an official document. In 1407 the bishop of Basel bought Olten. Four years later there was a big fire in the city, which caused a big economic loss. In 1422 a second fire broke out destroying all the important houses and factories built by the city of Basel. Only after 20 years a new church was built. In 1532 Solothurn bought Olten from Basel and since that time Olten belongs to Solothurn. Olten was a very small town with few people until the 19th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Olten developed into an important city in Switzerland.

Location

Located in the center of Switzerland, Olten has optimal connections. There are well and fast connections to Zurich, Basel and Lucerne as well as for the airports in Zurich and Basel.

The Oldtown

The small and lovely old town is the right place for having a short walk or make shopping. It is very interesting to watch all those historical buildings and very relaxing to feel the special atmosphere.

Museums

Museum of Art

This museum is one of the most interesting in Switzerland. There you will see pictures from Martin Distli, one of the most famous painter in Switzerland in the first part of the 19th century, and artworks by other artists.

Museum of Nature

It is a museum on two different floors. On the first floor they show a skull and tusks from a mammoth found next the today's train station, and other remnant of animals from the region. On the second floor you will see typical animals of this region.

Museum of History

The museum, founded in 1901, shows a lot of Oltens past. Their own money they had, a wonderful collection of tin, old tumblers and old traditional jewelry, self-made by the goldsmiths.
